Years ago I worked in an office with a man who seemed nice at first.
He was old enough to be my father.
He would compliment my clothes. Nothing weird. Just little things like, “You look nice today.”
Then it became, “You look really good today.”
He started to hang around my desk. At first it was about work. Then it wasn’t.
I didn’t really know how to respond, so most of the time I just didn’t.
At work he would come up behind me and put his hand on my shoulder. Sometimes he’d touch my lower back when he walked past. Once, he put his hand on my waist and left it there for a few seconds. We were standing together while waiting for the coffee to be ready.
I laughed the first few times because I didn’t know what else to do.
I remember thinking, Maybe I’m making too much of this.
One day he asked me if I wanted to get drinks after work. I said no.
He asked why.
I said I had plans.
I didn’t.
After that, things got awkward. He started asking why I was avoiding him. He’d say things like, “Come on, we’re friends.”
Eventually I told my manager that I was uncomfortable around him.
She asked me what he had actually done.
I told her.
She listened and then said, “I think he probably just likes you.”
I didn’t know what to say to that.
So I went back to my desk and kept working.
I never reported it again.
He still works there.
Sometimes I wonder if I should have made a bigger deal about it.
Then I remember that I shouldn’t have had to.
Maybe I was overreacting
